In Part Two, you will notice that some components in the Generic Practices by Goal section of each process area are in a box and labeled “Staged Only,” “Continuous Only,” or “Continuous/Maturity Levels 3–5.”

Components that are not marked apply to both representations. Components marked “Staged Only” apply only if you are using the staged representation. Components marked “Continuous Only” apply only if you are using the continuous representation. (See Figure 2.4 for an example.)

Components marked “Continuous/Maturity Levels 3–5” apply if you are using the continuous representation or if you are using the staged representation and are pursuing maturity level 3, 4, or 5. However, these components do not apply if you are pursuing a maturity level 2 rating using the staged representation.
